This is the author's final work in an extensive series of examinations of the lives and actions of major players in the RAF from the Great War through the aftermath of the Second World War. He died during completion of the proof reading.The book obviously was intended to utilize the great depth of knowledge accumulated over decades of investigation to present an overview of these important figures and their relations with the most important of all, Churchill. It adds little to information previously presented on many of the characters, indeed there is quite a degree of cut and paste from earlier works, but the picture of Churchill is almost completely fresh. The warts in that picture are given a prominence which often overshadows the beauty spots - to the extent that doubt arises over the author's sense of perspective. However, the information, warts and all, is invariably illuminating and balance is ultimately restored in the concluding chapters.For such an overview to have context the cast must be widened beyond those in the RAF. In doing this an extensive array of senior army and navy commanders and significant politicians are drawn into the analysis. Invariably the comment on them and their work is direct and stimulating with no false notes.All in all, the air of the book is that the author feels himself absolutely free of any necessity to avoid unpalatable truths or the breaking of any shibboleths grown up around and about any particular characters or actions.
